Franco d'Andrea recorded a series of improvisations during the making of several CDs' worth of solo piano in April of 2001; the music within this nearly 74-minute disc is fascinating, playful, moody, and never dull. Although both Lee Konitz (who contributed liner notes for this CD) and Phil Woods have made a number of recordings with d'Andrea, he remains less familiar outside of Europe, though he deserves wider attention from jazz audiences worldwide. The adventuresome spirit throughout this recording will have piano lovers going back again and again to appreciate new facets within this gem of a release. In this case, abstractions don't mean inaccessible music. Highly recommended.
