Smash Hits Years: 1989 Review

by Andy Kellman

This decade-closing volume of Rhino U.K.'s budget-priced Smash Hits series does, thankfully, include some variety outside of the artists who appeared several times from the 1980 through 1988 discs. Cookie Crew's "Got to Keep On," Kon Kan's "I Beg Your Pardon," Shakespear's Sister's "You're History," Karyn White's "Superwoman," the Happy Mondays' "Rave On," and the Beloved's "The Sun Rising" help offset another round of lesser hits from the likes of over-represented solo artists and groups like Bananarama, Chris Rea, Jimmy Somerville, and Then Jerico. The inclusions of Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" and Simply Red's "If You Don't Know Me by Now" were, perhaps, inevitable.
