AllMusic Review by

Smash Hits 1984 does feature some of the year's biggest hits across a variety of styles, including Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," New Order's "Thieves Like Us," ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man," Laura Branigan's "Self Control" (released months after RAF's original version), and Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You" (easily the best Prince cover), so it is capable of plugging some gaps for collectors of popular '80s music, but nearly everything here can be found on dozens of other comps released prior to 2009. Furthermore, the series of which this is part -- which, to be fair, is budget priced -- uses too many artists several times over to be nearly as attractive or thorough as the Rhino (U.S.) new wave-centric Just Can't Get Enough series.
