This release by bassist Harvie Swartz gives one the rare opportunity to hear altoist Charlie Mariano (long involved in world music) back in a fairly straight-ahead setting. Mariano and Swartz are joined by the underrated tenor John Stubblefield, guitarist Mike Stern (who adds some fire to the music), pianist Ben Aranov, drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Mino Cinelu. They perform John Coltrane's "Equinox," and the standard "My Romance," and four Swartz originals. As usual, the bassist plays a mostly supportive role, preferring to put the focus on his writing. Excellent music.
