AllMusic Review by

Ska Spectacular, Vol. 1 is a good budget-line compilation from Charly, featuring several tracks each from a few key ska groups of the '60s. It opens with a good dose of music from the Maytals -- six songs ranging from the jumping "What's on Your Mind" to the soulful "It's No Use." Following this come a few from the Blues Busters, an early ska/soul group, who cover the traditional "Wings of a Dove" and the ska music-R&B vocal number "I Don't Know," followed by two originals from the Ethiopians, including their hit "Train to Skaville." Rounding out this collection of ska from the mid-'60s is three from Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, "Sammy Dead," the traditional "Oil in My Lamp," and "Jamaica Ska."
