AllMusic Review by

"The Love Generation that went to war," proclaims the album cover, "40 classic hits from the 60's." This statement is violated on the first track, which is neither a classic hit nor from the '60s. It is Melanie's extended performance of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay," taken from her 1971 album Garden in the City. In fact, there is no thematic or chronological consistency to be found on these miscellaneous selections except that the compilers had access to various stray record catalogs, including that of Buddah Records (which recorded Melanie), Pye (which recorded Donovan in his folk period), and Immediate (British pop/rock acts like the Small Faces). This is an incoherent jumble of material, most of it from British performers of the mid-'60s, much of it consisting of rarities and juvenilia. There is some entertaining material here, but as a collection this album is a complete mess.
