After trumpeter Maynard Ferguson reluctantly broke up his big band in late 1964 after eight years, he formed a more economical sextet with two of his top soloists (Willie Maiden on tenor and baritone and altoist Lanny Morgan) and his rhythm section (pianist Mike Abene, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Tony Inzalaco). Although this group did not last long, their mainstream recording has excellent performances and good solos from the somewhat forgotten band; highlights include Maiden's ballad "April Fool," the cooking "No More Wood" and "Summertime."
