Singles is a promotional disc prepared to coincide with the release of the first single from Gene's third album, Revelations. It contains almost all of their singles up to "As Good As It Gets," the only thing missing being the band's debut single, "Be My Light Be My Guide." That's not really a problem, since most of the songs here are of a consistently high standard, and much of it is Gene's best work to date. Tracks like "For the Dead" and "We Could Be Kings" are fine slices of post-Smiths indie pop, while "Speak to Me Someone" shows just how far ahead of the teachers the pupils really are. Not everything is great -- "Fighting Fit" is close to pedestrian -- but for the most part Singles is a fine collection of songs.
