AllMusic Review by

Simply the Best Platinum Soul contains 50 songs on a pair of discs, all of which are undeniable classics. It does pay a little bit of attention to the '70s, but this is pretty much the domain of early- to mid-'60s material. This will be a perfectly functional package for youngsters, as well as parents and grandparents who are finally getting around to replacing those misplaced 45s. Featured picks include Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour," William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful for What You Got," Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto," Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" (though he's going to yell at you to do so), Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign," and the Spinners' "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love."
