The surprising success of composer Mort Garson's seminal electronic effort, Zodiac Cosmic Sounds, inspired A&M to commission a 12-volume series spotlighting each individual astrological sign. Still one of the most ambitious and bizarre projects ever initiated by a major American record label, Signs of the Zodiac effectively anticipated new age music by roughly a decade, creating deeply contemplative and otherworldly soundscapes rich in mood and portent. Pairing Garson with electronic innovator Paul Beaver and narrator Cyrus Farrar, Sagittarius -- the ninth volume in the series -- emphasizes the star sign's associations with travel and expansion; the music here is more far-reaching and challenging than on any other Signs of the Zodiac entry, giving free rein to Beaver's most cosmic instrumental impulses and yielding Farrar's most dramatic and over the top readings.
