Despite its modern cover art, Reader's Digest's Signature Series: Happy Day Songs collects some relatively old recordings of such favorites as "You Are My Sunshine," "Skip to My Lou," and "Froggie Went a Courtin'." These are performed by the Fireside Children's Chorus, whose soft, mature vocal stylings sound pretty different than the brighter, louder singing on many current children's records. Bass singer Owen Brannigan contributes "Polly Put the Kettle On" and "Are You Sleeping, Brother John?," while James Walker & His Chorus and Orchestra perform "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window." There's nothing wrong with the fact that these recordings are somewhat older; indeed, they might remind parents or parents-to-be of the children's albums they grew up with. It's just that anyone expecting Signature Series: Happy Day Songs to sound like a VeggieTales or Wiggles album will be in for a surprise.
