Guitarist Brad Buethe made his recording debut on this rather dry but mostly intriguing outing. He performs seven of his originals in a quintet that also includes trumpeter Danny Hayes, bassist Kip Reed, drummer Mike Clark, and, most notably, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. Not too surprisingly, Lovano often takes solo honors. Buethe has not become a household name since this time, but this, overall, is an impressive set of well-played, original post-bop jazz -- music that is easier to respect than to love.
