AllMusic Review by

Shipwreck was recorded in 1990, and presents the raw, early end of Al Larsen's garagey, indie-pop sound -- most of the tracks lack the overtly twee qualities which planted Some Velvet Sidewalk so firmly in K's International Pop Underground, and sound instead like a rougher, less polite version of Jonathan Richman. Despite a workable concept, though, much of Larsen's catalog is less than amazing; and while Shipwreck's garage and indie qualities could make this more palatable than other releases, quite the opposite is true -- as much as the album's sound seems slightly more interesting than that of Some Velvet Sidewalk's later work, the truth is that Larsen's notoriously spotty output fared far better as time moved on.
