Compared to "Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards," this second single is a much better choice to represent the superb Worker's Playtime -- simple, to the point, happy-sounding acoustic guitar pop with Billy's earnest voice and knowing, sad lyrics. It hops along well despite the disquiet expressed in the words, always a formula for a good single and another reminder that when it comes to relationship songs, Mr. Bragg is one of the best. But Billy, Billy, Billy -- couldn't we have a non-LP track for the 7" B-side? As good as "Must I Paint You a Picture" is, what is this 7:08 extended version stuff? Lord, the LP version was a tad long to begin with.
