Nina Storey's third album Shades continues to expand her stylistic range, from the soulful, gospel-tinged "Intro" and "Let Us Walk" to the reggae rhythms of "If I Were an Angel" and the title track's breathy simplicity. Studio versions of "Coffee and Margaritas," "Left," and "Disease of Suggestion" -- which popped up on the live album Bootleg -- lose some of their immediacy but benefit from Storey's increasingly sophisticated and detailed arrangements. "Face," "Crown," and "Blue Million Wish" are among the other highlights of Shades, which continues Storey's trend of improving with each release.
