Selections: 1997-2000 [Ultra] Review

by Joshua Glazer

ADNY stands for Alexi Delano New York. And right from the sweet strings and Latin drums of "Shiver Me," it is obvious that this compilation of singles produced by the Chilean-born and Swedish-raised producer living in the Big Apple is deeply affected by a New York musical heritage. Fortunately, Delano never falls into the deep and boring trap that happens to so many New York producers. The instrumental "I'm Still Here" is rich with harmonium and vibe melodies, while vocal tracks "Life," "Dreaming," and "ICU" are masterfully recorded and full of complete vocal parts, not just typical accent loops. It is as though everything around Delano become magically deep. Even a remix done of Swedish techno producer Cari Lekebusch's track, "Broken DX," comes out magically blissful on the other side. Released by Montreal's Turbo Records, a label known mostly for their impeccable mix CDs, Selections stands as the only artist album the label has released. But thanks to Delano's consistency of vibe yet diversity of sound, this is a rare compilation of tracks that works as well as a whole as the individual records did on vinyl.
