Selected Ghosts is an MP3.com released sampler from David Nigel Lloyd's earlier work, How Like Ghosts Are We, and the content ranges through a variety of traditional and original compositions, from the sexual innuendo of "The Bird in the Bush" to "Bold John Barleycorn," a traditional ballad that first-time listeners might think is a story of grim dismemberment, until the end, where it proves to be about ale brewing. "A Ballad of Cole Younger/Suqullay..." is a strong performance, and the outlaw saga is a good match for Lloyd's voice. This one definitely merits repeat play. "The Greenhorn Woodcutters" is also engagingly quirky: a modern take on the old theme of a maid with two swains, only these two are bickering while hauling off wood for her in their pickup. There's a cowboy twang to the pedal steel guitar on this one that's different from the more old-style folk songs on other cuts, yet fun in its own style. So while long-term David Nigel Lloyd fans may already have these songs from the earlier release, the sampler does prove an enjoyable introduction for new listeners, and one that will encourage them to keep an ear out for subsequent releases of his work.
