After some time off to grieve the loss of bassist Scott LaFaro in a car accident, Bill Evans resumed his busy schedule. His first two post-LaFaro trio dates resulted in an album of ballads (Moonbeams) and more heated material (How My Heart Sings). This two-LP set from 1977 has all of the music from the two projects, programmed as they were originally recorded rather than by how they were released. Bassist Chuck Israels, although not the virtuoso LaFaro was, proved to be a strong sparkplug for Evans while the sensitive drummer Paul Motian was still aboard. The performances (which have since been reissued on CD) are highlighted by "How My Heart Sings," "If You Could See Me Now," "Stairway to the Stars" and four then-recent Evans originals (including "Re: Person I Knew" and "34 Skidoo"). Excellent music.
