Real Gone Music's 2016 two-fer Sea Level/Long Walk on a Short Pier acts as a companion to Razor & Tie's 2013 CD that coupled Cats on the Coast and On the Edge -- the first and third Sea Level albums, respectively, so this features the second and fourth from the jazz-rock band. While the pairings are puzzling -- chronological would've seemed to make more sense -- these nevertheless are a handy way to get the band's Capricorn recordings. Of the two featured here, Sea Level might be the better record -- it was recorded near their peak, while Long Walk on a Short Pier didn't appear in the U.S. until 1998 -- but both showcase a dexterous, adventurous band whose members never let their chops get in the way of a groove.
