Although Beat Happening made a career of celebrating simplicity, their best records boast a subtle complexity and chromatic scope that reveal surprising and welcome new dimensions within the trio's signature sound. "Sea Hunt," arguably their crowning achievement, contrasts foreboding drones and Calvin Johnson's equally ominous vocals with Heather Lewis' warm, tender harmonies to create music as vast and mysterious as the ocean itself. The flip side, "Knock on Any Door," likewise refutes pigeonholing. Johnson's pained vocals are wrought by a desperation and isolation that are anything but cute and cuddly.
