Science Fiction Jazz, Vol. 5 Review

by Kingsley Marshall

The fifth volume in the consistently impressive German label's series of compilations again doesn't fail to impress. Zurich DJ/producer Robert Jan Meyer (aka Minus 8) throws in enough heavyweights -- with Lonnie Liston Smith, Groove Armada, and the Zero 7 take on Terry Callier's "Love Theme From Spartacus" all present -- to draw the listener into the sounds of more obtuse artists. Mole regulars Yonderboi, Lemongrass, and Marcel Dudas all offer typical stunning contributions and fellow Swiss beat diggers Tweak are dragged into this perfectly executed mix before Meyer dips into his own catalog for the delightful "Zero-G." Throw in tracks from the Cinematic Orchestra and hard-to-find beats from Extended Spirit, Rozzo, and Espen Horne's effervescent Bobby Hughes Experience, and this is another superb album in a series that comes highly recommended.
