Samba de Uma Note So Review

by Scott Yanow

A couple years before hitting it big in the United States, guitarist/singer Joao Gilberto recorded this rare but valuable album with Antonio Carlos Jobim's piano and orchestra. Gilberto performs six Jobim tunes (including the debut versions of "One Note Samba," "Meditation," "O Pato" and "Corcovado"), plus his own "A Salute to Bonfa" and five other songs (highlighted by a delightful version of "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover"). The performances are quite brief (all of the dozen songs are under two minutes apiece), so the playing time is quite chintzy. But what is here is quite enjoyable, and it is one of the few exampes of bossa nova in its formative stage.
