Perhaps the best way to organize a box set by a great recording artist is just not to organize too much, to simply collect the work together and put it in a box. This is what has been done here with four fine Mose Allison albums done originally for Atlantic. They are presented in their original form, in the original sequence, and you even get the original liner notes although there are of course enjoyable and typically succinct comments from 32 Jazz honcho and longtime Allison booster Joel Dorn. The drawback in the case of Allison is that each of these albums had a few disposable tracks, which multiplied times four adds up to a big chunk of material the listener may feel no desire to return to ever again. The playing by three different trios and one quintet is generally on a very high level, although the latter group proves that less is more in the case of back-up for Allison. The listener might be better advised to seek out smaller packages of this totally original and extremely enjoyable recording artist.
