Alice Coltrane, who passed away just prior to this release, was often overshadowed by the epochal association, both personal and musical, that she shared with her husband, jazz icon John Coltrane. But Alice Coltrane was a talented pianist, harpist, and composer in her own right, fusing the essences of jazz and Indian classical music (such as the ragas of Ravi Shankar) in a series of discs for the Impulse label in the late 1970s and early '80s. SACRED LANGUAGE, features, alas, some of her last performances this side of eternity. While her husband was clearly a major inspiration, this album is a thought-provoking and commanding collection of music that clearly stands on its own and represents Alice for the distinct artist she was.
