We have Pythagoras to thank for the invention of the Monochorde, a large wooden instrument that features 72 strings--all tuned to the same note (in different octaves). Strumming the Monochorde produces powerful overtones that are purported to aid in healing the body on a vibrational level.
Fabien Maman, a healer and Monochorde expert, plays along with Steven Halpern's grand piano on this album of incredibly placid tones. Each of the first four tracks is devoted to a single keynote, around which simple melodies pool. The final track is for solo Monochorde, an 11-minute piece constructed entirely of overtones. The effect is mesmerizing.
