Saarbrucken 1979 Review

by William Ruhlmann

This is a bootleg album, released by Frank Zappa without enhancement, and also available as part of the Beat the Boots! box set. It contains a concert played at the Saarbrucken Open Air Festival in Germany on September 3, 1978. The set list includes a cross-section of '70s favorites, starting with "Dancin' Fool" (soon to appear on Sheik Yerbouti) and including "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow." The album runs 73 minutes and purportedly is taken from a soundboard tape; the sound quality is good, but not great. It's a respectable performance, but this same material is available in so many other places, especially the legitimate Zappa albums of the period, that it's only necessary for completists.
