Deutsche Grammophon's CD release of its 1977 collection of 12 Russian romances and folk songs is bound to please fans of bass Boris Christoff and of melancholy Slavic folk idioms. Christoff brings effortless authority and absolute commitment to this repertoire, for which his dark voice and strong sense of drama are ideally suited. His richly textured tone is solid from its depths to its gently floated falsetto. The uncredited arrangements are packed with emotion, but with enough restraint to avoid the bathos into which these songs could easily slide. Christoff is accompanied in some selections by a chamber ensemble and in others by Orchestra Russe de Balalaïkas, conducted by D. Liakov. Deutsche Grammophon's sound is atmospheric but clear, with excellent balance between the voice and accompaniment.
