AllMusic Review by

This is a highly recommended set for Mel Tormé fans. The singer is heard on radio transcriptions (released for the first time in 1985) that compare favorably with his studio recordings of the period. Four selections are with the Marty Paich Dek-tette of 1956-57 while the other ten numbers (including instrumental versions of "Sugar Loaf" and "Marie") feature Tormé accompanied by a nonet headed by trumpeter Shorty Rogers. With such songs as "When the Sun Comes Out," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," a "Porgy and Bess Medley" and two versions (with different arrangements) of "Lulu's Back in Town," this is a delightful set of cool but swinging jazz.
