In the rather intimate setting of Round and Round, altoist Greg Osby and pianist Marc Copland perform eight often-melancholy and thoughtful originals plus the standard "Easy Living." Osby's fresh improvising style is mellower and more lyrical in this format than usual but still quite advanced. Copland creates a floor for Osby that is secure if not overly safe and challenges the altoist. Nearly all of the pieces are ballads ("Deed-Lee-Yah" is a rare exception), and since the melodies are not particularly memorable by themselves, this is a sameness to the program that keeps it from being essential despite some fine playing.
