AllMusic Review by

Available from, Rough Ideas is a collection of demos, copyrighted 1990-2001, on which Jesse Winchester tries out songs that mostly turned up on his 1999 album Gentleman of Leisure in more formal recordings. The backup tracks mostly sound like synthesizer playing that is intended to approximate guitars and strings and a rhythm section. Winchester is in good voice, and the songs are typically gentle and literate, with traces of country, blues, and funk. In addition to ten tunes that made it to the 1999 CD, there are two extras, "O What a Thrill" and "I Turn to My Guitar" that deserved to. (Both songs were used on Winchester's 2009 album Love Filling Station.)
