AllMusic Review by

Trumpeter Lester Bowie's second of two projects for Muse (both are worth searching for) matches the witty and adventurous player with two fellow members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago (bassist Malachi Favors and drummer Don Moye), the second drums of Charles Bobo Shaw, brother/trombonist Joseph Bowie, and, on the opening "Tender Openings," violinist Raymund Cheng. While "Rope-A-Dope" is supposedly a musical re-enactment of a Muhammad Ali fight, "St. Louis Blues" has its humorous moments. Throughout, the highly expressive Lester Bowie is heard in prime form. [Rope-A-Dope was reissued in 1999 as part of 32 Jazz's double disc collection, American Gumbo.]
