AllMusic Review by

The first volume in a series that's also available in a three-disc box, Roots of Black Gospel offers a narrow swath of gospel classics dominated by matriarch Mahalia Jackson and early perennials Golden Gate Quartet. There are a few intriguing obscurities, including "Do Lord Send Me" by Georgia Peach & Her Gospel Singers and "Go Where I Send Them" by the Alphabetical Four, but the compilation includes eight tracks by the Golden Gate and two by Jackson. A few interesting novelties make it fun for the adventurous: "Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven" from Louis Armstrong and the Lynn Murray gospel choir, the Charioteers' seminal "Wade in the Water," and a Cold War relic titled "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb" by the Pilgrim Travelers.
