While not really a thorough overview of Afro-Cuban jazz roots (no Machito?), this Blue Note disc still contains enough top cuts to make for some very enjoyable -- and occasionally educational -- listening. Taking in both bebop and hard bop material, the 11 tracks feature such worthy contributors as Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron, James Moody, and Sabu Martinez. And for some frenetic mambo, Stan Kenton kicks the set off with his dedication piece "Machito" (there he is). A fine mix that will work wonders for your next Latin-themed beatnik party.
