Roger Miller Classics Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The bulk of Varese Sarabande's 2002 collection Roger Miller Classics is devoted to re-recordings Miller cut in the mid-'80s with producer Buddy Killen. That means that all the hits here -- "Dang Me," "Chug-a-Lug," "Do Wacka Do," "King of the Road," "Kansas City Star," etc. -- are latter-day recordings; the only original hits here are three early-'70s minor hits for Columbia: "Open Up Your Heart," "I Believe in the Sunshine," "Our Love." This, of course, means this is hardly the first choice for anybody who wants only one Roger Miller disc, or a collection of Miller at his best. That said, these are pretty lively, entertaining re-recordings -- they may not be originals, but they'll still bring a smile to your face. So, instead of being a collection for beginners, this is better seen as a collection for the diehards who want to hear Miller sing the old songs in a different way, one more time.
