The first volume in the '80s retrospective Rock the First is one of the stronger releases in the series -- a handful of these tracks (Run-D.M.C.'s "Walk this Way," Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" and Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" included) rank among the great singles of their era, while others (like David Lee Roth's "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" and Bananarama's "Venus") remain enjoyable fluff.
