Since it's devoid of any real radio hits -- only "Cliffs of Dover" will be familiar to casual listeners, and that's because it was used in a commercial -- Rock Guitar Greats will be of limited interest to anyone who's not a guitar fanatic. Those fanatics, in turn, will welcome parts of the record and be frustrated with others. There's nothing particuarly rare here, since every cut is previously unreleased, the music tends to blend together, and it all leans toward progressive metal, with the exception of Eric Johnson, Dickey Betts and Jeff Beck. Furthermore, these may be representative tracks, but they aren't necessarily the best songs they've done, which increases the package's value. Featured guitarists include Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Howe, Rik Emmett and Steve Morse. In the end, the album is primarily for guitar fans who want to have a lot of different guitarists in their collection without buying individual albums, and this is a pretty good (but not great) sampler.
