Rock Artifacts, Vol. 1 Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Rock Artifacts, Vol. 1 offers a nice mix of familiar hits and obscurities from the Columbia vaults. "Hot Fun in the Summertime," "More Today Than Yesterday," "Hold Your Head Up" and "That Lady" all sell the disc to a casual audience, but collectors will be brought in by such songs as Looking Glass' "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne," Grin's "White Lies," Chase's "Get It On," Pacific Gas & Electric Company's "Are You Ready?," Sweathog's "Halleujah," Mashmakhan's "As the Years Go By," Chi Coltrane's "Tunder and Lightning," Redbone's "Maggie," Spiral Starecase's "No One for Me to Turn To," Keith Barbour's "Echo Park," Christie's "Yellow River" and Redbone's "The Witch Queen of New Orleans," all of which rarely appear on various-artists compilations. They're reason enough to pick up the disc.
