Lothar Hempel, a J. Burger associate through the shared alias Trinkwasser, is presumably the person behind Magnet, who is the same person behind Blitz (grinding gunk-goo for Auftrieb) and Phong Sui (pop-oriented indie electronic). Earlier in 2003, Kompakt Pop reissued "Wintermute," a Phong Sui track that originated two years earlier on Burger's Teil 1 compilation of Leichtes Hören tracks. Under the Magnet guise, Hempel -- again, if this is in fact Hempel -- delivers one of Kompakt's most dazzling releases of 2003. Both "Rising Sun" and "Abendstern" amount to gleaming, romantically dark neo-trance. They are entirely engrossing, rich with swift keyboard ripples. The two tracks are similar enough that the B-side might as well be considered a continuation or part two of the A-side, yet they are different enough from each other to be equally addictive.
