The Right On! series certainly isn't the first to assemble a batch of original recordings later plumbed and plundered to create the foundations of latter-day hip-hop and dance tracks, but it's one of the best. Scouring the nooks and crannies of the vast Warner Bros. and Atlantic Records vaults, each set goes far beyond the tried and true, digging up rare singles and overlooked album cuts that are both compellingly fresh and strangely familiar. Although the material ranges from blue-eyed soul (the Young Rascals' "It's Love") to jazz (Keith Jarrett's "Mortgage on My Soul") to funk (Earth, Wind & Fire's "Moment of Truth"), the songs hang together not just because they're built on the kinds of swaggering beats, sinuous keyboards, and killer breaks that DJs love to reclaim, but because each track is much more than just the sum of its parts -- whether you're fishing for samples or not, there's much to discover here. Other highlights include Young-Holt Unlimited's "Wah Wah Man," Little Richard's "Nuki Suki," Claudia Lennear's "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky," and Richard Evans' "Angela, My Sister."
