Since the mid-'60s, drummer Barry Martyn, clarinetist Rudy Balliu, and trombonist Luciano Invernizzi have played New Orleans jazz on an occasional basis in Italy. This 2000 recording finds the three principals in fine form, jamming in a sextet also featuring trumpeter Fabrizio Catteneo, pianist Guido Cairo, and bassist Pierre-Luc Puig. Martyn takes five decent vocals, but the emphasis on the first 13 selections is on spirited ensembles and joyful playing, with the better numbers including "Gloryland," "Constantly," "The Man I Love," and "Savoy Blues." The final four songs have trumpeter Beppi Zancan in Catteneo's place and, although Zancan's three vocals (including on "Yes! We Have No Bananas") are just so-so, the group's spirit makes these performances also recommended to Dixieland and New Orleans jazz fans.
