AllMusic Review by

Bluebird does right by one of jazz's finest with this career retrospective charting tenor giant Coleman Hawkins' progress from some early jazz dates with Fletcher Henderson to latter-day sides by vocalese trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Including his classic readings of "Sugar Foot Stomp," "Body and Soul," and "April in Paris," Retrospective also checks in on "Bean"'s memorable stints with McKinney's Cotton Pickers, some of bebop's best, his own outfits, and plenty of all-star contingents. Along for the ride are such venerable stylists as Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Waller, Chu Berry, Sonny Rollins, and Teddy Wilson. A lot of Hawkins and all of it good.
