The only release by obscure New Wave of British Heavy Metal band Legend to become available on CD, Retroshock 1981-1984 is a well-assembled greatest-hits collection which should take care of curious listeners and NWOBHM fetishists alike. The finest moments from the blue-collar combo's two independently released albums are featured here, along with a number of rare tracks. Some of the early material sounds positively lo-fi at times, but the four tracks taken from the band's extremely rare 1983 EP display an entirely new level of maturity, and one can only wonder at what might have been. Conversely, a previously unreleased track entitled "Questions and Answers," recorded later that year takes a turn for the worse with its barely concealed new wave tendencies. Either way, Legend remains a well-kept secret, but still one worth discovering for serious metalheads.
