AllMusic Review by

Tom Wax, the resident DJ at the famous club Dorian Gray in Frankfurt, mixes the first entry into the Residents series of DJ mix albums. Given the club's reputation, it's perhaps not surprising that Wax spins mostly tracks that border on the fine line between techno and trance. After all, this is Frankfurt, Germany, the city where techno evolved into trance in the early '90s. And Wax doesn't depart too far from tradition, dropping big tracks like the "Dance Original Mix" of Timo Maas' "Ubik," the "Timo Maas Remix" of Azzido da Bass' "Doom's Night," Josh Wink's "How's Your Evening So Far," and Chris Liebing's "Klarke," the last coming late in the set. No, this isn't the glowstick-ready trance you associate with the U.K., and this isn't the lush, atmospheric techno you associate with Detroit; this is that harsh, intense, and dizzying sort of techno-trance you associate with legendary Frankfurt labels like Harthouse and Eye-Q -- the sort of music that leaves you feeling shook afterwards in a state of disturbed reeling. Overall, this is an impressive mix, especially if you like this sort of thing. The mix isn't pandering; Wax never drops records just because they're popular. He takes time to mix the records well and sets up his finale like a good DJ should.
