This 12" is not only Carl Craig's homage to the seminal proto-techno anthem E2-E4 by Kraut hero Manuel Göttsching but is also the earliest re-emergence of Craig's Paperclip People moniker on the Planet E label. Though this record, like much of Craig's music, is a reverent nod to the songs that inspire him, it doesn't stand on its own as well as many of his other sample-based tracks. He temporarily lost his knack for making the old samples sound new again; instead, this one sounds more like its two primary elements pasted together unimaginatively. Göttsching's soaring melody of heart-aching beauty is almost perverted (in the bad way) by Craig's signature drums. If it weren't for Basic Channel's and Derrick May's gorgeous renditions of E2-E4, one might have to say that perfect records ought not to be remixed, but in avoiding such a gross overstatement, it is more fair to say that Craig simply fell off on this one.
