From the days of the fabled International Artists label, with its flagship acts the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola, to the '80s heyday of the Butthole Surfers or Scratch Acid, the Houston-to-Austin corridor has fielded its share of aggressive weirdness. Houston's Bozo Porno Circus puts an intentionally vile spin on east Texas insanity on Regenerate, but coming 25 years after the first offers from the genre-defining Throbbing Gristle, whose similar sex-and-violence obsessions seemed to come from an altogether darker psychic space, the lyrics on this album are so cartoony that it's impossible to take them seriously even within the broad confines of the industrial-goth-fetish scene. More damagingly, the music is competent but uninspired electro-industrial that sounds like 15 years' worth of Skinny Puppy, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, and Pigface albums thrown into a blender. Songs like the grinding, chattering "Magic" would probably keep the dancefloor filled at your next leather-and-piercings party, but listening to Regenerate at home, it's not surprising that Bozo Porno Circus's big live draw is a trio of half-clothed dancers.
