Pianist Mike Garson and flutist Jim Walker, both with jazz and classical backgrounds and experience, came together on this 1984 project to present songs that reflected both their backgrounds. The results were often musically impressive but emotionally detached, as if each was so anxious to showcase his talents he forgot about putting more of himself behind the playing. As with all Reference releases, it's superbly engineered and sounds wonderful. Sometimes, as on "First Song" or "Magic Spell," the duo truly reach spectacular points; at other times, they're merely proficient.
