This unusual two-CD set is, for the most part, an oral memoir with simultaneous background music by the late pianist Art Hodes, recorded by Dr. Van Velser during two studio sessions in 1971. A number of the anecdotes are included in Hodes' excellent autobiography, Hot Man, though it is interesting to hear them in Hodes' own voice. Unfortunately, those who acquire this set for the music will be disappointed, as it remains subservient to Hodes' anecdotes, except for a talk-free rendition of "Apex Blues." Repeated hearings of these stories will likely tire the most ardent fans of Art Hodes.
