A terrific compilation for hardcore Gene Vincent fans. The first seven songs are mid-'60s tracks Vincent recorded for Challenge Records, backed by the cream of LA sessioneers (including Glenn Campbell and Seals and Crofts), and they show him adapting with surprising ease to the musical tastes of the day.
His original stance as rockabilly wild man is deliberately downplayed; this material is mostly tasty California folk-rock and pop. The remaining tracks (with the exception of a 1994 acappella version of "Be-Bop-a-Lula" by Vincent's daughter Sherri Ann) are taken from a live concert originally broadcast by Swiss radio in 1967. Here, Vincent (backed by the splendidly monikered French band Le Rock 'n' Roll Gang) performs both the Challenge tracks and a few of his '50s hits.
