Reaching for the Sky/Crosswinds Review

by Andy Kellman

Peabo Bryson's second and third albums -- 1977’s Reaching for the Sky and 1978’s Crosswinds -- are compiled for this release. Both were gold sellers and featured a combined total of five charting R&B singles, including the Top Tens “Reaching for the Sky” and “I’m So Into You.” For whatever reason, Capitol was content to keep these two albums of rich, sophisticated soul -- featuring arrangements from Richard Davis, Clare Fischer, and Johnny Pate -- out of print and never issued them on CD, but David Nathan's Cherry Red-affiliated label filled the void in 2011. There is a handful of radio edits, along with in-depth liner notes and full-page reproductions of the sleeves.
