For the third of three CDs put out by the Austrian RST label, the focus is on female vocalists of the mid-'40s. The music in general is quite jazz-oriented with such prominent sidemen as trumpeters Billy Butterfield, Charlie Shavers and Yank Lawson, trombonist Lou McGarity, clarinetists Hank D'Amico and Peanuts Hucko, tenors Bud Freeman, Boomie Richman and Charlie Barnet, guitarist Les Paul, violinist Joe Venuti, drummer Buddy Rich and the Stan Kenton Orchestra getting their chances to be heard. Of the singers, Martha Tilton is excellent on "If I Had You," Ella Fitgerald, Dinah Shore and the lesser-known Monica Lewis and Marie Greene are heard on two songs apiece, Jo Stafford gets three numbers, there is one appearance by June Christy and four by Kay Starr. This CD is recommended to fans of the singers and swing collectors although Vol. 1 is the main V-Disc release to get.
